Our Subjects
Neural Signals Inc. was formed in 1989 to serve the needs of our patient-subjects using neuroscience. The aim of our neuroscience is primarily to benefit our patients. We value scientific progress but believe in putting human needs before our scientific goals. At Neural Signals, the patient comes first, which is a defining cornerstone of our company philosophy.
The above subjects above gave their permission to have their faces displayed. The first subject on the left, MH, showed that the neural activity recorded via Neurotrophic Electrode can be controlled by her. Our second subject, JR, showed that he could communicate with a computer and spell out words for synthetic speech. He is the world’s first cyborg. On the right is ER who has demonstrated that a speech prosthesis is possible. See the Research module for details.
Subject Tim had mitochondrial myopathy, a condition that destroys the mitochondria in his muscles as well as his brain. So his study did not produce useful recordings. Subject David had ALS for 30 years. He was implanted in his motor cortex area and useful signals were produced. However, his incision did not fully close and so the electrodes were removed after six weeks for his safety. The sixth subject was the founder of Neural Signals Inc. See News and Comments for Dr. Kennedy’s implant history.
